The Apprenticeship

The  Apprenticeship:

This was set up in May 2008 as a pilot to provide an amazing opportunity for a young person to work for 6 months at BBC Bristol. Six candidates applied with 4 going through the training programme which included:

  • Presentation workshops
  • CV writing
  • Interview techniques

After the 2 month training period each candidate had to submit their application form which was developed by the PR+MA and the BBC Bristol's Human Resource Team. The candidates were then invited for an interview at BBC Bristol. The interview consisted of the following elements:

  • A half hour research exercise
  • An hour long interview with a panel of 3 senior BBC employees

After a difficult decision the successful candidate was chosen and he began his 6 month appprenticeship in July 2008. Over the 6 months the Apprentice will work in the 3 different departments:

  • BBC Radio Bristol
  • Newsroom (Points West)
  • Current Affairs (Inside Out)

By the end of the 6 months the Apprentice will have gained a huge range of transferable skills, incredible experiences and produced a short film or radio broadcast.

The Future:

Building on the experiences of the first Apprenticeship we are currently developing the training programme for the next round. The training programme will be over a 6 month period leading up to the interview process for the Apprenticeship placement. The training programme will include:

  • 3 sessions a week with a self development practitioner who studied under a Daoist master for seven years and has been teaching young people in mental and physical discipline for the past 4 years.
  • Team building exercises
  • Leadership skills
  • Team tasks - these will entail the candidiates working together in teams in the planning and delivering of practical based tasks. Candidates will each take a turn leading a team.
  • Workshops in - CV writing, presentation and communication skills and interview techniques.
  • 3 residential weekends with each one having a different focus.

The Apprenticeship is open to young men and women aged between 18 and 25,  living in disadvantaged areas in Bristol.

We wish to be able to offer a wide range of Apprenticeship placements that cover the public, private and community sectors. If you are interested in your organisation becoming a partner in the Sharp Shotz Apprenticeship please contact us.

The next round of the Apprenticeship will be open in the New Year, more details will follow. If you wish to find out more please contact us
